late luminescence

Pages bound and sealed, a phantom that grabbed life by its hands and clung to it until God gave it a soul, just like you and I.

Crafted out of ink and fiber, letters that form words that congeal into a person I live for. We breathe life into one another, a kind of symbiosis. She takes me into her life to give my life luster, and I take her into mine to give her more life. There is a comfort in knowing I can always skip ahead to page 200, that her fate is already a predetermined bittersweet.

They are sacred, these stories, because they give love to a lonely spinster in a house full of, you guessed it, cats. I personally don't like cats to much, so maybe I'll be the dog lady. Dragons and adventure to the boy out in Iowa, unicorns in lush meadows to the little girl in New York. All these stories are someone's babies, they are trees that have been cut and shredded into a pulp to become blank palettes for life.

In these pages you disdainfully look down upon as "boring", there is the rise and fall of nations. There is time capsules of each era, priceless pieces of our history that are entrusted to these phantoms to keep and to display. Show, not tell. But then again, what are rules made for if not to be broken?

So somewhere up there, in the stars and milky swirls with chocolate chip cookies, there is a phantom taking flight, a promise sealed to it's forehead. And somewhere down here, among the cities and valleys we call "the real world", someone's light bulb is flickering, the sparks of a potential supernova. Another "real world" is being erected, because if there's anything these inky morsels have taught me, it's that reality is all relative.

photo: pine tree branch taken at Arcadia, CA

Broken pots half buried
ivy creeping up the stucco
latching on and sucking all the civilization
& remnants of what used to be
a childhood unexcavated

See those mossy loose bricks?
we used to smash acorns with
stealing their twin caps
in exchange for our crowns
petals still line the uneven path
but now, just for itself

there's a tranquility here
in the unsilent silence
the cool fresh green of the grass
the rough pine needles, therapeutic
as they are weaved into braids
by restless hands

do you remember how we raced
with lizards, to their bushes
bright wide eyes peering at
a broken egg shell
what a treasure it was, then
how I wish it were still gold

the tree that gashed my stomach
has grown ever so tall
and I, with it
as we stretch towards the sun
no longer monkeying around
too busy filtering through the watery sky
for streaks of dusty gold

the breeze blows by
fluttering rain of gold leaves
because some things never change
the mother oaks rustles a hug
and I tell her it's good to be home

even if I am no longer
one if the wild thing

It was just dusk when the glass shattered, shards of their precarious silence lying on the tiled floor.

"No."

The young man in the chair opposite of her looked up, then back down at his spaghetti. I nearly dropped the glass I was holding! On all their Friday evenings, I had never heard either speak a word. Neither moved for a second, and then the young lady snatched her handbag, chair screeching, before strutting out of doors, into the horizon. Finally, the man looked up as she walked out the door, hands ruffling his meticulously styled hair as he crumpled in his lacquered chair.

I, being the nosy bloke you know I am, couldn't help but wonder aloud, "Why, isn't he gonna go after her?" I've never regretted saying anything more in my life.

The question echoed around the suddenly silent diner, the poor boy looked terribly shocked, and I couldn't help but pity him. Waving my towel in the air to dismiss the crowd's penetrating gazes, I brought him the usual slice of chocolate mousse cake. Only when I approached did he peer up at me, eyes filled with dry tears, candlelight flicking in the depthless pools of his evident despair. Straightening up, he managed a weary smile.

"Any way I can cancel that?"

I almost nodded my head, but his luck held, and my manager marched right over there and told him all about how our desserts were the finest, and how he shouldn't have ordered it if he didn't want it.

The lad rubbed his eyes, and shook his head. "It's just that..." He broke off, evidently deeming this a lost cause. "Sorry to bother you, ma'am. I'll take it, I've been told it's absolutely delicious."

A triumphant smile spreading on her face, my manager completely ignored the way he gazed at that slice of luscious dark chocolate as if it was an neon green kangaroo. I, on the other hand, was completely confused. Hadn't the pair of them eaten this every Friday night? Him in his various suits of the same, her with her strings of pearls and matching shades of different similarity in stagnant silence? And I, the ever faithfully employee, with two forks clattering against the table every week?

In the end, the young man broke me out of my thoughts. A laugh bubbled from his chest, racking into a sob. Only then did I notice the closed satin box clutched in a fist.

Breaking the cycle of his hysterics, he took a large forkful of cake and held it up in the air, muttering incredulously, "I don't even like chocolate, you know that?"

For centuries
the world has debated
what is right
& what is decidedly not
we've bent this way and that
in the winds of time
but maybe there isn't
any line between the two
maybe, there's just gray
and grayer
perhaps there isn't
truth and lies
there's just which truth
is truer
your truth
my truth
our truth
their truth
we each have our own
our own bamboo
in a bamboo forest
and if everyone thought
theirs was the tallest
the sturdiest, the best
nobody would ever get anywhere
we'd be at war, all the time
so maybe we always knew
that the world was made of gray
it's just that we all want to think
that the hero wears white
and the enemy wears black
after all,
the victor writes the history books
if only
the blurred vast world of gray
were as simple as
a panda's simple life
of black and white

The lights go on
like clockwork
when the sun begins to die again
life fades from the skies
cotton candy clouds burn in the horizon
and a rainbow,
the sun's promise
to rise again

the lights go on
the switching of lights in every room
in every house,
on every street
of this neighborhood,
this town,
this state
street lights illuminate empty streets
and we continue as if nothing has changed
in our eternal day

the lights go on
because we are deathly afraid
of the monsters we face in the dark
our true selves emerging
their fears manifesting
becoming shadows on the walls
and the tears fall on our cheeks
soaking the pillows and blankets

the lights go on
we marr God's dark canvas
and tell the stars they weren't enough
blot out the dark unknown
with everything we do know
forgetting the wonders of the sky
in favor of the lamplit paper
furrowed brows
and a hand's furious scribbling

the lights go on
as our way to buy more day
aren't you tired of the
never ending light?
don't you wish we could dance
with the stars and moon
and all the tiny fireflies?
or would you rather foolishly pretend
that your bubble of lights
is better?

the lights go on
as they do every night
trees become inky silhouettes
on the fading horizon
why don't you put away the lamp
stare up out the window
and let the falling diamonds in the sky
finally lull you to bed
and into a peaceful rest?

She is one of the lucky ones

Accepts her heritage
Not the only fish in school
who looks like 中國
she isn't told to "get the hell out"
of the only home she's ever known
Pin straight waterfalls of midnight
that refuses to curl around others
hardened onyx gems, her soul
pinched like steamed 小龍包

Flown to her motherland
for once, nobody points out they're all asian
or assumes that they are born geniuses & "overachievers"
heard the zither mourn and dance
fierce dragons and friendly lions adorning pagodas
dollar popsicles relieving the sun's glare
a monkey hopping through the night markets
gathering all the pieces history books don't say

"banana", they joke too loudly
banana, resounds in her ears
香蕉,she flings hatefully into herself
clinging to English subtitles
so much is lost in translation
if she is American,
does that make her less Chinese?
If she is Chinese,
does that make her less American?
which comes first, the  海外,
or the 華人?

No matter where she turns
she is a dragon with nowhere to land
even though she's never eaten a dog (or a snake, or a rat for that matter)
she don't gorge herself on McD's, & is not outrageously disrespectful

美國
"America the Beautiful"
her warbled youth sang in school
She has seen the purple mountains
towering over, protecting her,
all her life
Shing seas have tousled her hair
as she frolicked in playful waves
when she hears America,
she thinks "Home"

China
中國, the Middle Country
是她的祖人的家
她自己的故鄉
it is encrypted in her DNA
tattooed to her forehead
weaved into her veins
her source, her history
the red center square of her expanding quilt
and she will climb the picturesque peaks inked in scrolls
until her lips spill forth 中文 seamlessly

and although America has dyed her ideals,
her lotus roots have been planted in its soul,
and 美國 is the country she calls home
on her wedding day,
she will not be in a pouffy white dress
after all, white is the color of death
no, she is kneeling to her 父母
in a gorgeous red gown
covered with dragons and threaded with gold
hair twined by a traditional jade pins
offering up a cup of 茶

she is one of the lucky ones

Message from Yours Truly

Hey, this is amaryllis :) So, if you're on here, I probably finally allowed you to read my work or this was a totally accident (happy one I hope). Either way, welcome! Also, as a reminder to those who know me-- remember that although much of it may seem like it's based off irl, some of it is fiction. Enjoy, and if you feel compelled to, I would love to see what you think in the comments!
